Native Americans
Why are only Indians referred to as Native Americans? Is it because it’s politically incorrect to refer to anyone born in America a native or is it more so because natural born American’s do not associate themselves with America?
I asked my ex-roommate where he was from and he said "I am Irish", so I assumed he is from Ireland, wrong- he has never been to Ireland and more than likely does not know where it is on the map, I would have preferred the answer for the question to be 'Ohio' or 'Oklahoma.' Then there are those claiming to be ‘”African-Americans,” most do not even know where in Africa their forefathers were stolen from- I bet most African-Americans do not know that slavery is persistent in countries like Niger and Sudan even to this day. And if they did, what are they doing about it?
So why are Indians Native and no one else? Is the alienation of oneself from the land they were born an admittance of guilt for the once bloody crusade against it natives? Or is it simply because they feel more connected to Europe or Africa than the United States of America?
